Terrible betting night for me.

What Went Wrong: UFC: I got too confident in my reads on the time props. I knew this was going to be hard to pick winners and lots of underdogs won. But I thought I had a decent idea which fight would last longer. There were a couple unexpectedly quick finishes. And then the Rountree fight went the distance which I was so sure would finish. Maybe it was bad reads or maybe bad luck.
I'm disappointed in myself for not having the disclipline to hold back knowing I wasn't confident in a lot of the fights - especially after having such a great week last week.
Loma vs Ortiz breakdown: I wasn't too surprised Loma's fight went the distance. And maybe if I had thought about it more I should have picked it to go the distance. He has a lot of things working against him in this fight. Ortiz was better than I thought he'd be. And one thing that I have noticed but never really verbalized about Loma is that he doesn't fight moving backwards and Ortiz is an aggressive counterpuncher. It was such a long time ago now, but the first fight he lost to Salido when turning pro was partly due to Salido's aggressive pressure volume style. Loma tends to wait until his opponent is done to strike back. But Ortiz didn't give him much time. Ortiz threw more volume and was busier. At times Loma seemed to wait too long or more than I think I've seen him do in the past. And Ortiz would go again.
When Loma did land he seemed to land more flush than Ortiz was landing. But Ortiz was busier. Ortiz is familiar with Loma since they have trained together. He is used to Loma's footwork so Loma had trouble getting angles on him on top of the fact that it is harder to get angles on someone who is bigger than you and has good movement as well. All these factors combined with Ortiz's advantage in youth, size, aggression, volume and Loma's layoff made it is very close fight. And maybe Loma underestimated and looked past him a little too much since he had trained with him in the past. I'm not sure.
I did not re-watch the fight and count all the strikes landed and try to score it. But when they were reading the scorecards I was not at all sure who had won though Loma did seem to be the one landing the more clear flush strikes. Being such a long time fan, I'm just glad Loma won. I want him to reach his goal of becoming undisputed before he retires. But going forward I see the youth and size of his potential opponents maybe becoming more of an obstacle for him as time goes on. Add power to the youth and size and it will be difficult. Add aggression and volume to youth and size and that becomes difficult too as we saw in this fight. So some of the young elite fighters like Haney, Tank, Stevenson they will each have their own combination of attributes which will make a difficult challenge for Loma.
Having said that, just because this fight with Ortiz was close, I don't think it necessarily shows Loma is showing his age too much. A lot of it had to do with Ortiz and his style - which isn't really too much like the others. So it will be interesting.
